Greetings, Earthlings. My name is Mike Rowley, I live in Oxford and I’m a strange creature from another planet (just north of Birmingham). My interests include politics (AWL, No Sweat, Labour Party, Unite) beer, music (anything from Handel to Radiohead, passing Britpop by with a shudder) more beer, the great outdoors (preferably not in the pouring rain with a huge bundle of leaflets/petitions) yes please, I’ll have another one and, currently, my research, which involves migrant workers and trade union organisation, or will once I get my arse in gear.
I’m currently studying at Ruskin College in Oxford and getting involved in student activism once again, which is great, but on the other hand makes me feel like an old fart. Sometimes I think I ought to be on that Grumpy Old Men programme on the telly. Then I look round the blogosphere and realise I’ve got a long way to go…
Seriously now, I’m committed to the socialist movement and my ambition is to get it actually to move a bit. I hope to work in some capacity for the movement and put all the theory into practice: best option as an organiser, worst option as an academic. I intend to Make A Contribution, hopefully not in as bourgeois a way as that sounds! And one of these days I might even work out what the #### people see in George Clooney…!
No wonder you’re not geting your dissertation done!!!

In case you haven’t heard via other sources:
The trustees, Friends and staff of the Working Class Movement Library invite you A Celebration of Ruth Frow’s Life on Saturday 5th April at 2pm at Peel Hall, University of Salford, The Crescent, Salford. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available. (Peel Hall is virtually opposite the Library – but please use the crossing lower down as the road is lethal!).
The most effective way we can commemorate Ruth is to ensure that the library she and Eddie founded to rescue and make available the history of working class people and their struggles for justice, equality and a better life continues, flourishes and reaches out more widely. We know that Ruth would have wholeheartedly approved that we ask for donations in her memory to be made to the Working Class Movement Library.
Please extend this invitation to colleagues and friends. We hope to see you on 5th April but know that if you are not able to attend you will be with us in spirit.
On behalf of the staff, volunteers and trustees,
Maggie Cohen
Chair of Trustees

Mike:
Hope you’re OK.
What (if anything) do you know about this:
From Ian Bone’s blog:
“SACKED COWLEY WORKERS CALL MASS PICKET MONDAY
“This could be Brown’s SALTLEY GATES. The sacked workers at Cowley – the ones who tried to make an omelette on the union officials heads – the feisty ones – are calling for A MASS PICKET OF THE COWLEY PLANT IN OXFORD AT 6am MONDAY MORNING GATE ONE. This is just the fightback needed to follow on from the Lindsey wildcats. Anyone within shouting distance get down to Cowley Monday morning. CHEERS FOR LETTING ME KNOW COMRADES………this could be the start of something big.”
Any chance of turning up there?
All the best
Jim
